Criminal Justice ReformOliver Oliver2024-09-30T18:37:15-05:00
We are looking for ways to make a real impact on criminal justice reform.
Some Facts to know:
-
The statistics related to wrongful convictions, and to race and wrongful convictions, are profoundly disturbing and illustrative of a deeply rooted problem. Studies estimate that between 4-6% of people incarcerated in US prisons are actually innocent. This would be about 50,000 people who are incarnated who are innocent.
-
Estimates of the number of people in the United States with criminal records range from 77 million to 100 million, or about one in three adults. This number is difficult to determine because of differences in how states keep records.
Why does this matter? We believe every life is important and here to be productive, and we have way too many people wasting away in prison. This is tearing at the fabric of society and families.
“The government can get almost anyone to plead guilty to almost anything” H. Jack Miller, by using a system which is unfair and designed to convict regardless of if a person is innocent of guilty.
Even many who are guilty and pay their debt to society and scared with the scarlet letter F for Felon their entire lives. Instead of trying to make people provide and self-sufficient, our society is holding them down making it very hard for them.
Thousands of individuals across the justice system are impacted by outdated and unfair practices, many of whom lack the resources or support to navigate their way to a second chance. When you look around your community, you may find those who have been affected by a system in need of reform, from those facing harsh sentencing to those struggling to reintegrate after incarceration. While various organizations and reform efforts provide vital services, the demand for change and resources often exceeds what’s available.
